Poppermost
Plows Path to Perdition
Poppermost
turns up the heat -- as if the sin needed to be any hotter
here in Vegas "hell" -- and plows a new path through all the music BS
straight to Perdition. So, why the "sudden change" in
direction?
"Not so
sudden," according to bandleader Alex Oliver. "Roy
and I
have done great work as a duo ever since we started the band over two
years ago, but options were limited when sketching out ideas for
songs. With the addition of Phil on drums, there was a change
in
the band's dynamic, making it possible to become the rock band we've
wanted to be since we started. Besides, we need more man
power to
keep the groupies away from Roy, not to mention protecting them from
him!"
Poppermost
recently decided that the bar scene wasn't the way to go.
No offense to cover bands, but playing "human jukebox" for a
bunch of drunks wasn't what the band really wanted to do. It
was
great for learning how to play together, how to play to an audience,
and reinforced their ethic of "work hard, rock hard." But how
many wisecracks can you come up with in response to some rummy's
request for "Baby Got Back?"
New
Web Digs
In the
time honored tradition of "out with the old, in with the new"
the Poppermost web site has taken on a totally new look.

Poppermost News Jul 2003
Hello
Popperpeople!
If you are
ready to rock to some great live music and rip the Las Vegas
night life apart, read on! We, at Poppermost headquarters,
would
like to let you in on where the action is. Take heed: squares
--
stay home!
Come help
us celebrate the second anniversary of Poppermost on Friday,
July 4, 2003, 9pm to 1am at the new Moon Doggies, located at 1750 S
Rainbow Blvd (between Charleston and Oakey), Las Vegas NV,
702-878-3392. No cover, and you have to be 21 or over, unless
accompanied by an adult in the restaurant area (which is the best place
to see the band anyway).
We have
the honor of playing the new and improved Boston, located at
1030 E Flamingo Rd (just west of Maryland Pkwy), Las Vegas NV,
702-368-0750 on Sunday, July 6, 2003, 8pm to 10:30pm. There
is a
$5 cover, but it is worth every cent, and you have to be 21 or over
(unless accompanied by an adult in the restaurant area). We
attended the grand opening for the Boston's new digs, and found it to
be a great rock club with a cool atmosphere. This is
definitely
the place to be.
We hope
you'll join us in welcoming International Pop Overthrow to Las
Vegas. This popular festival has been rocking Los Angeles for
the
last 6 years, and now they've brought it here, just so we could play!
In the immortal words of the Church Lady, "Isn't that
special?"
Seriously, IPO Vegas is a two day festival starting Tuesday,
July
15th at the Palms, and Poppermost will be the opening act on Wednesday,
July 16, 2003, 10pm to 10:30pm for the International Pop Overthrow Las
Vegas festival held in the Palapa Lounge at the Palms, 4321 W Flamingo,
Las Vegas NV, 702-942-7777. NO cover. 21 and over
only.
If you can't join us in person, then check it out via live
web
cast by http://www.nowstream.com/.
Long live Material Issue.
On a more
serious note, we wish to express our deepest sympathy to the
family of Leslie Belford for their recent loss. Leslie passed
away a week ago Sunday, on June 22 and she will be sorely missed by
many. Leslie and husband Rod founded the Worldfolk Foundation
eight years ago, and through their efforts, this organization's support
of the local music and arts scene will remain a constant reminder of
what can happen when you leave out the unnecessary back biting, and
fuse the scene with friendship and dignity.
Leslie's
light will never dim, in that her dedication and spirit will
always live on in all of us, if only we take a moment to remember what
she stood for, and let it shine through us.
Thank you,
The

Hi
everybody,
This is
just a quick update on a couple of exciting Poppermost gigs,
but first...
We had a
great time Tuesday night at the KKLZ - VH1 Classic Rock Battle
of the Bands Contest at The Club inside the new Cannery Casino
&
Hotel, and we want to thank all our wonderful fans who cheered us on
via email and your presence, and no, we won't really disown the few
that couldn't make it. Even though another band took home the
main prize, we won, too, because out of 300 entries, there were only 10
bands picked to perform. On top of that, David Fishof, one of
the
judges and the producer of the Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp, said Roy was
his next choice for best bassist!

Poppermost News Jun 2003
In the
words of WKRP's Dr. Johnny Fever, "Hello fellow babies!" and
welcome. Yes, we know. It's been so long since
you've heard
from the gang at Poppermost, you thought we "sold out," "took the
money," and "bailed like D.B. Cooper." Well, you'd be right!
At this very minute, we're sipping pina coladas and singing
Perry
Como songs by the ol' campfire. No, you haven't just stepped
into
the Twilight Zone. This really is the June 2003 issue of the
Poppermost newsletter. Seriously though, we're still here,
and in
fact, last night we rocked Saigon along with Dylan Moses, and had a
blast. Thank you Dylan!
We regret
not getting this issue finished in time to alert everybody to
last Thursday night's great music, but here's your chance to get in on
the action, because we're doing it again, and like last night, it's
guaranteed to be a hit with the audience. Poppermost will be
performing on Thursday, June 19th, this time with special guest Blu
Realm at the Saigon Restaurant, 4251 West Sahara, (east of Arville on
the south side of the street), Las Vegas, 702-362-9978. The
cost?
A mere $3! It doesn't get better than that for
great
entertainment. The Saigon Pops is an all ages show, so bring
the
family and pop on through! This is your chance to see the
bassist
jumping around like a flea on a hot griddle, and to watch as the
drummer "hot-wires" the pounding rhythm like nobody's business.
And yeah, you get to laugh when the singer falls off of the
stage... again.
NEWS
FLASH!!! We interrupt this program for "BREAKING NEWS"
in
the world of Poppermost. We just got a call from KKLZ, and
Poppermost has been picked to compete in the KKLZ-VH1 Classic Rock
Battle of the Bands Contest sponsored by 96.3 KKLZ, VH1 Classic, the
Cannery Hotel and Casino, Budweiser True Music, and Sam Ash Music.
It happens at The Club inside the Cannery Casino, 2121 E
Craig
Rd, N Las Vegas NV, 702-507-5700, on Tuesday, June 10th at 7pm!
Eddie Money will be one of the judges! We need you
to BE
THERE, please, to cheer us on or we WILL DISOWN YOU AS FANS. :-)
Thank you, and we now resume our regularly scheduled
programming.
We would
like to take this time to thank some of our friends from
California who have stopped by Vegas to watch us behave like spoiled,
sweaty rock stars. Or, in the case of our fun gig at Macy's,
Simon and Garfunkel. Hey Curt, Gaby, Erika, and Chris!
Thanks for the love, folks. Oh, and Curt; Alex
promises "no
more bearhugs in public viewing areas." Thanks to Shawn
Eiferman
for his help in landing that very unique gig, and for Macy's for
helping sponsor local indie music.
A couple
other bits of news. We started taping recently for our newest
music video of "Erika," our latest single. If you'd like to
be a
part of the video, just let us know. We still have positions
available, so get on board. And Roy is running sound, for the
third year in a row, (Congratulations Roy!) at GameWorks and some of
the other local venues for Worldfolk's 5th Annual Battle of the Bands
Festival http://www.worldfolk.org/schedule.html,
so go cheer your favorite band to victory.
Time to
say "cheerio" till next month, and thanks for everything from
the Poppermost gang at Poppercentral. This newsletter was
brought
to you by the number 8, and the "silent" e.

Welcome
to the Popperlist
Welcome to
the lucky #13 issue (only in Vegas!) of the Poppermost
newsletter. Once again, it's a new year -- time for change,
renewal, growth, and rock 'n' roll -- and since we're already well into
the year, you'd better get your butts in gear. In this issue,
we
offer thanks, advice, and fun activities for your enjoyment.
For
all you new subscribers who don't yet know the who and how of
Poppermost, visit our web site http://www.poppermost.com/
for some history, pictures, music, and more.
Popperstuff
There are
more activities below, so keep reading, but the first fun
thing Poppermost would like to offer you is our live performance on
Tuesday, February 4, 10:30pm to 11pm at Acoustic Asylum (A2) in the
Palapa Lounge at the PALMS, 4321 W Flamingo, Las Vegas NV.
702-942-7777. NO cover. 21 and over only.
Just
in case you're thinking you can't come because you'll miss MTV's "Real
World," think again. The lounge regularly shows it from 10pm
to
10:30pm on their huge viewing screens that allow you to ponder the true
voice of "dysfunctional" in grand and glorious style right along with
other "Real" fans. Then just stick around for the real world
of
live entertainment -- us! Is that cool, or what?
The next
event that we know about, so far, is an opportunity for you
and your friends to help support a good cause, learn a little about
wines from ancient times, and have some fun. We're going to
an
exotic wine tasting party and you're invited to this charitable fund
raising event to help an Episcopal group with the renovation of their
multi-use facility called Camp Galilee, a conference center and retreat
located on the shores of Lake Tahoe. The Poppermost duo,
Steven
Kalas, and friends will be providing live musical entertainment, so you
can count on hearing some Beatles tunes. The event is
scheduled
for Sunday, February 23 from 1pm to 4pm at the Alexander Dawson School,
1160 Town Center Dr (Town Center and I-215), Las Vegas NV.
Admission is $75 per person and tickets can be obtained by
contacting Jackie Robinson at ByStavros@aol.com
or 702-873-6496. Remember, all proceeds go for a good cause.
To hear Steven Kalas ahead of time check out his band,
PaperCymbal, on Saturday, Feb. 22 between noon and 3pm during Patio
Days (a free concert) held in the courtyard of Christ Church Episcopal,
2000 S Maryland Pkwy (corner of Maryland and St. Louis).
On KOMP
92.3's Homegrown Show with Laurie Steele, one of the radio
stations that plays our music, we had the pleasure of being #8 on the
list of "Most requested" songs / bands of 2002. It was
definitely
a great memory for the year and we'd like to send a special thanks to
everyone who called and requested Poppermost. In 2003, we
want to
be #1, and that requires your help. Please help us in
reaching
our goal; give Laurie Steele a call at 702-876-3692 on Sunday evenings
during her "request" segment, and ask to hear Poppermost.
Tell
her that you "just adore the sexy bass player."
We'd also
like to say thanks to the staff of Las Vegas' Club 50 at N
Lamb & Washington (formerly Legends Lounge), as well as our
fans,
for making our performances there really special. And yes,
Alex
is recovering nicely from acting like a boob resulting in his on-stage
fall, which occurred during the band's Saturday evening show last
month. Says Alex, "I don't know exactly what went wrong, but
I
plan not to land squarely on my ass next time. Pete Townshend
can
KEEP all of that jumpin' around, man!" We don't think so --
we
think he'll always continue to have fun acting like a boob because he
loves having fun with his music. If nothing else, it makes
life
interesting and memorable.
You might
want to take advantage of this little piece of
news.
Have you collected your $20 payment from the major record labels
&
retailers yet? They're forced to give $44 million back to
consumers, but since most people don't know about it yet, it's going
mostly unclaimed. We checked it out and it's on the up and
up.
Even if the individual claims are voided because too many
were
filed, it's still a win-win situation since the funds will go to music
education, as mentioned in the AP newswire article, http://www.wired.com/news/print/0,1294,57111,00.html.
Like Derek Sivers of CD Baby said, "It seems only fair that
musicians should get as much of this $44 million as possible!
There's some kind of poetic justice here." Tell any
music
enthusiast you know to file their claim at http://www.musiccdsettlement.com/
soon. There's a deadline, so don't dawdle.
Poppertales
How many
people, yourselves included, do you know that have already
failed their New Year's resolutions? Often the reason is
because
the resolution is unrealistic and hard to keep. Maybe it's
time
to try a supplemental goal that is fun, like improving your love life,
thereby allowing better stickability. With that said, here
are a
couple more of those "re-ignite the spark" tips we've been having fun
sharing. Let's face it, love is always a great resolution.
#41 - Send
a singing telegram to your companion's office or school.
Make it some silly little ditty that has a hidden meaning no
one
else but you and he/she will understand. Be creative.
Only
do this if you're sure it will be well received by your mate and is
appropriate to the particular work setting. The last thing
you
want is for it to blow up in your face, i.e., no nookies and cream for
dessert.
#43 -
Stroke "texture mitts" all over your mate's body. Put
together a collection of small pieces of material in different textures
that are big enough to wrap around your hand. Use anything -- silk,
satin, organdy, linen, fur, burlap, leather, cotton, nylon, vinyl,
chenille, knits, terrycloth, denim, and many more. Start out
with
whatever you have readily available -- you can always increase the
collection with time. For better control while stroking, sew
or
glue each piece of material to form a mitt that will fit over your
hand. For maximum pleasure, use as many of the mitts as time
will
allow. A little patience with the embers of foreplay will
result
in a mighty fire.
We said
this last month, but it bears repeating word for word.
Remember, communication is paramount in any relationship that
involves two or more parties, whether it be lovers, spouse, co-workers,
family, or even band mates. Most problems can be resolved if
people stay alert for adverse reactions and discuss them before brick
walls of misunderstanding get built too high.
Moving on,
we have a treat for you, dear readers. This
month's
"Pops Off" is the work of Roy Al Rendahl, a.k.a. our "Little Mad
Scientist." More often than not, Roy is either busy on stage
playing bass, or behind the scenes making sure the band looks and
sounds great. At the moment, he has something to "pop off"
about,
and appropriately enough, it fits right in with good ideas to use for
change and renewal, so heeere's.
Roy
Pops Off
"Don't
Worry, Be Happy." I hated the song, but the concept is one of my
guiding principles, at least it has been since my junior high school
days. In grade school and junior high (middle school to
some),
sometimes I would be afraid to take a test or give a book report or
something like that. So I would conveniently get sick,
sometimes
for weeks at a time, that is, until my mom would threaten to take me to
the doctor. Surprising how quickly health can return!
Sometimes this fear is caused by worrying about what others
will
think; it's what I now call the "What Will The Neighbors Think
Syndrome." I don't know why, but at one point, almost over
night,
all of a sudden I said to myself, "What's there to be afraid of?
Prepare as much as possible, do the best you can, then move
on.
Don't worry about it." I refer to this breakthrough
as "My
Big Change." No, no, no, not a sex change, a mental change!
This new feeling is why I don't usually get stage fright now
or
let anxiety stop me from doing what I need to do. I don't
know
where it came from, but if I could bottle it, I could make a
million. I think it's also kind of a Norwegian thing to
appreciate what you have (the "Be Happy" part), because it could always
be worse! "Be Happy, Don't Worry."
Cheerio
Not only
does he look the part, but as you can see from Roy's words, he
actually has the wisdom of our little mad scientist. Apply
this
wise advice to your own life and watch the positive results.
Just
don't sing the song he mentions in front of him -- he's liable to
"POP!" Just kidding! We'll see you at our fun
functions
listed above and again right here -- same Pop channel -- next month.
As always, thanks for joining us!
